Most people view guns as the most important tool in the infantry. Though rifles are important, other nonweapon equipment like computers, radios and basic armor (protection) are also needed. Tomorrow's Infantry will use the Land Warrior System and the Vision 2020 Future Force Warrior System which combines weapons, communication gear, computers and protective equipment all in one.

Land Warrior System: Equipment of the Future
- Integrated Helmet: Uses stronger / lightweight material for more protection. Helmet also has a small computer and sensor display to view maps.
- Computer/Radio: Attached to the backpack and will have global positioning system (GPS). Allows soldier to also send video or photographs to other soldiers or a command center. Computer will be size of a credit card and stitched in the fabric of the Land Warrior gear.
- Software: Search maps and mission data. Software designed to be upgraded.
- Protective Gear: Backpacks mold to soldier's body by using automotive racing technology in the backpack frame. Lightweight body armor plates can also be added for use in heavy combat.
Vision 2020 Future Force Warrior System: Equipment of the Future
- Uses nanotechnology so body armor will be soft and flexible until struck then it turns rigid and bulletproof.
- Nanotechnology may also sense the surroundings and change color to camouflage a soldier automatically.
- Very light - only 45 pounds compared to 92 pounds used today.
